Police disperse youths protesting against emir
Police in Maradun, Zamfara state, on Wednesday used tear gas to disperse some youths who staged a peaceful demonstration against the Emir of Maradun, Alhaji Mohammed Tambari.
The irate youth, who set bonfires in different parts of the town, also barricaded the main road leading to the emir’s palace, preventing people from going in and out, chanting solidarity songs.
The youth accused the traditional ruler of dabbling into partisan politics.
They accused the royal father of playing a prominent role in the selection and subsequent endorsement of a particular candidate of a political party for the senatorial seat in the area.
They called on the state government to intervene on the issue before the situation degenerated further.
They warned that they would take all necessary measures to ensure that the emir did not enforce any candidate on the people.
When contacted, Tambari accused some politicians of trying to incite the youth against the emirate “in order to achieve their selfish interests’’.
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Lawal Abdullahi, who confirmed the incident, said the police had to disperse the youths to prevent possible breakdown of law and order.
“It was a fight between two rival factions of a political party. It was not aimed at the emirate council,’’ he said.
Abdullahi said the command was still investigating the incident, adding that normalcy had since returned to the area.
