... As Barkum advises on proper utilisation
Farmers in Bunkure local government area of Kano state have been called upon to make good use of the crops seeds and fertilizer given to them at the on-going seed distribution exercise in Kano/Katsina/Maradi by International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA).
The call was made by Alhaji Sunusi Sani Barkum, chairman of Bunkure local government Area, which held at Barkum village, yesterday.
Alhaji Barkum said the importance of agriculture to the development of any community is well known and therefore it is a privilege for the council to have such kind of agricultural development project.
He stated that communities to benefit from the project are Bunkure, Barkum, Kumurya, Sanda, Satigal, Kulluwa, Chirin, Gwamma, Zanya and Gabo.
The chairman added that about 2,000 farmers wil benefit from the free seeds and fertilizers that would be distributed, with 20 farmers coming from each community in the local government area.
He thanked the state government for the continuous support to the project through the Kano state Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (KNARDA).
Also speaking at the event, Dr. Bashir Babaji, a researcher from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, said before coming up with seeds for cow-pea, soya-beans, groundnuts, beans and rice, the institution did research on soil conditions and major problems hindering farming progress in the area, which in turn prompted the institution to develop seeds that will be perfect for the area’s farming conditions that does not exceed a period of 75 days.
On his part, Malam Saleh Maihimma, one of the farmers who received the seeds, expressed appreciation with IITA, the state and the local government council for their immense assistance to the development of farmers in the area.
