Bauchi LG polls: Police uncover plans to import arms
Mr. Adanaya Talman-Gaya, Bauchi state commissioner of police, says the command has uncovered plans by some politicians to import arms for use in local council polls scheduled to hold tomorrow in the state.
Addressing leaders of the political parties in Bauchi, Talman-Gaya said the police were fully aware of moves by some politicians to stockpile arms to cause chaos during the elections.
``The Police have deployed uniform and plain-clothe armed policemen to all entry points in the state as part of security measures to fish out those involved and protect lives and property of law-abiding people.
``The Police and other security agencies will deal ruthlessly with anyone found in possession of dangerous weapons during the election,'' he warned.
He said more than 6,000 policemen would be deployed to protect lives and property during the elections.
Already, the command has received re-enforcement from neighbouring states for the assignment, he said.
Talman-Gaya said that the command had so far arrested more than 60 suspected political thugs as part of efforts to rid the state of miscreants.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps in the state has also mobilised more than 4,000 of its personnel to provide security during the elections.
In another development, the police in Zamfara have commenced e-policing training for officers and men to improve their performance.
Lawal Abdullahi, the command's Public Relations Officer (PPRO) made the disclosure to newsmen yesterday in Gusau.
He said the training was part of the programmes introduced by the new commissioner of police in the state, Alhaji Muhammad Abubakar.
Abdullahi said the training would be given to all officers and men of the command, and would last for three months.
He said that the trained officers and men, would acquaint themselves with computer literacy and modern techniques used in crime detection.
This, according to him, will give them the opportunity to meet the standard set by police in advanced countries.
He said the training was in line with the directives of the Inspector-General (IG) of Police aimed at enhancing the investigative skills the beneficiaries.
He said the training would be conducted simultaneously in the three senatorial zones -- Gusau Kaura Namoda and Talata Mafara.
