Civil societies urged to embark on grassroots awareness campaign

CIVIL societies in Kano state have been advised to create more awareness on the issue of maternal mortality, most especially at the grassroots level.
Senior programme officer at the community health and research initiative, Malam Abdulhamid Bagara gave the advice at a one-day maternal mortality reduction coalition meeting, held at the community health and research office along Maiduguri road, during the week.
According to him, maternal mortality has been a silent issue, and a greater killer of women, pointing out that maternal mortality ratio stood at about 1,700 per 100,000 line birth, explaining that the number of women dying due to pregnancy and child-birth has always been increasing by the day.
He added that, the aim of the meeting was for the coalition members to meet and plan for the activities that will come-up in December in order to create awareness and people and policy makers toward improved services for the reduction of maternal mortality among women in the state and local government areas.
He stated that proper enlightment will also help a lot in reducing the maternal mortality rate.
