CNPP moves to win back aggrieved members
The Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) on Wednesday initiated moves to bring aggrieved political parties back into its fold at a meeting in Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN reports that the body’s new leadership, led by Chief Maxi Okwu, Chairman, Citizens Popular Party (CPP), had set up a reconciliation committee last week.
The Chairman of the Committee, Mr Agbo Major, told newsmen after the meeting that the committee was able to reach an understanding with the aggrieved members.
``The newly elected leadership realised that the only way to forge the strong opposition for which the CNPP was formed is by having every member actively involved in its activities.
``In the past there were three factions of the CNPP but this was resolved when all the factions came together to elect a new leadership which resolved most of the issues,’’ he said.
Major, who is also the National Publicity Secretary of the CNPP, was unhappy that only 38 of the original 49 parties actively participated in the CNPP’s activities in Lagos.
``Out of the 11 political parties that have grievances against the CNPP, nine were present at the meeting and have pledged their support for the new leadership.
The chairman said that some of its members informed him that they stayed away from the group because of the emergence of factions and a lack of direction in the past.
He declined to name the parties, but said: ``What is important is the reconciliation that the committee was able to achieve.’’
Major said the committee had concluded plans to bring back the other two parties that did not honor its invitation to the reconciliation meeting.
``This reconciliation is nation wide and will take place in other states soon though at different days and months,’’ he added.
