Corps members tasked on nation building
By UMAR DANLADI ADO & SALISU MARAFA
KANO state governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau has implored corps members to during their service year become patriotic and dependable allies capable of making the nation proud in future.
Malam Shekarau stated this during the closing ceremony of the 2008 Batch ‘A’ Group II orientation course for youth corps members deployed to the state held at permanent orientation camp Karaye yesterday.
The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Engr. Abdullahi T. Muhammad Gwarzo, noted that as agents of positive change, they must shun divisive tendencies, mutual suspicion, corruption and other vices that may left the nation downtrodden of the development ladder.
According to him, Kano state and its people will always remain hospitable and tolerant to people of different cultures and beliefs, urging them to interact with people freely.
The governor further enjoined them not to let the country down, especially at this point when the nation seems to be on the crossroads and the leadership question remains a recurring decimal.
Shekarau maintained that the scheme exposed youth to national development and the inter-personal skills of leadership, tolerance, healthy competition and selflessness.
Earlier, the state coordinator of the NYSC in the state, Mr. Emmanuel Adewuyi, had disclosed that out of the 1,243 members who attended the programme, 67 were relocated to various states based on marital grounds while 56 relocated on health reasons.
Mr. Adewuyi, who said a total of 1,122 members were posted to all parts of the state, warned the corps members on the dangers of embarking on unauthorized journeys or enlisting in the NYSC with fake certificates.
Some of the corps members who spoke to Daily Triumph expressed happiness and appealed to their colleagues to accept their postings with good faith.
Mr. Joe Patrick of Edo state thanked Kano state government for providing them with all the necessary facilities during the three-week orientation exercise.
Similarly, Hannatu Halilu from Niger state, said the NYSC exercise is very good avenue to unite Nigerian youth. ‘’ I am feeling bad now because I would leave many people I know here,’’ she explained.
