Education: Canada pledges to assist Nigeria
Canada on Wednesday pledged to assist Nigeria in the area of education, its Deputy High Commissioner, Mr Jean Gauthier, made the pledge at the 7th Canadian Education Fair for 2010 in Abuja.
``We have introduced more Nigerians to our system of education; we have passed through a difficult economic situation like Nigeria.
`` Education is the key factor in economic development and the more you have quality education, the more you achieve economic growth,’’ Gauthier said.
He said many Nigerian professors were products of the Canadian education system, adding that some of them were also working in that country.
Gauthier said it was not easy for a large country like Nigeria, with a population of more than 150 million, to educate all citizens.
``To give education to a population of over 150 million people is not easy to come by.
`` It has to take a long period of time and involves huge amount of resources,’’ he said.
He said this informed his government's resolve to assist in expanding facilities for more Nigerians to acquire education in Canada.
The envoy said that the fair was also an opportunity to showcase the Canadian system of education in terms of facilities, cost and standards.
