Environmental problems: KNSG to collaborate with FG
Kano state government has re-iterated its willingness to collaborate with the federal ministry of environment to provide more viable solutions to environmental problems in the state and the country at large.
This was disclosed by the state governor, Malam (Dr.) Ibrahim Shekarau when he received the minister of environment who led the delegation of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) on a courtesy call yesterday.
He explained that looking at the threat posed by environmental hazards to people in the state; the state government has accorded priorities to regulating and preventing the natural problems.
He added that much emphasis was laid on the problems of water supply and clearance of waste materials to enhance good health among the teeming population, telling the visiting team that government has procured enough waste disposal vehicles to address the issue of waste in the state.
The governor who expressed appreciation to the federal government for citing the National Reference Environmental Laboratory in Kano state which he said will help in no small measure the benefiting states, urged the federal government to support his administration’s efforts toward desertification so as to ensure a safe society.
Earlier speaking, the minister of environment, Mr. John Odey had told the governor that they were in the state for the official commissioning of the National Reference Environmental Laboratory which was established to analyze both air and water pollutions as well as soil and refuse sediments all with a view to addressing environmental problems.
The minister further revealed that the choice of Kano among the two other states, Rivers and Lagos was not far-fetched from the consideration of the state’s efforts in addressing environmental problems as well as for the need to assist it because of its population density, vulnerability to desertification and other environmental hazards including the current threat of global warming.
He said that there is a clear indication that the laboratory which is the first of its kind in the country will be the best in terms of performance , commending Kano state government for agreeing to collaborate with the federal government and his ministry to find possible solutions to environmental hazards.
