Enugu Assembly wants Law School fees reduced
The Enugu House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging President Umaru Yar'adua to reduce the school fees paid at the Nigeria Law School.
The resolution also urged the National Assembly to intervene in the high fees paid in the law school and other higher institutions.
Presenting the motion, the sponsor, Hon. Michael Onyeze (Igboeze North), said that high fees was a deliberate attempt to deny the poor access to education.
He said there was speculation that the law school would increase its fees to N350,000, saying this would deny many students entry into the institution.
Onyeze said there was a report that the school authority had also directed all law students to buy laptops, which he said, was another attempt at frustrating students from poor homes.
Contributing, Messrs Christopher Ugwu (Enugu East), David Atigwe (lgbo-Etiti), Abel Chukwu (Aninri) and Marcel Njeze (Udi North) criticised the high cost of education in the country.
Njeze said that education remained the back bone of economic development, noting that for the country to eradicate illiteracy, citizens must have access to affordable and quality education.
But opposing the motion, Mr Emeka Nnamani (Enugu North) said that the sponsor of the motion based his argument on speculation.
He said that the House should not base its argument on rumours, adding thatthe laptops demanded by the school was in the interest of the students.
Nnamani said that laptops would enablethe students take notes and download other reference materials from the internet.
