Food security responsible for KNSG’s support to agriculture--Commissioner
KANO state commissioner of agriculture and natural resources, Alhaji Musa Sulaiman Shanono has said that the present administration of Malam (Dr.) Ibrahim Shekarau, Sardaunan Kano, has been supporting agriculture tremendously in order to enhance food security of the state and the nation at large.
In a keynote address delivered at the “2009 Annual Planning Monitoring and Evaluation workshop” organized by National Food Reserve Agency, held at Royal Tropicana Hotel, Kano, Malam Shanono stated that under the special mass food production programme of Malam Shekarau’s efforts towards boosting agriculture, they were able to create employment, reduce poverty and provide enough food reserve in the state.
He said, under this noble programme, small holder farmers organized into groups and were supported with production inputs and training in order to increase their productivity and complements Kano state government’s initiative towards enhancing food security.
Malam Shanono explained further that in all 12,000 small holders farmers’ groups were formed along with a state apex association. So far these groups have benefited from series of capacity building interventions, as well as highly subsidized inputs and services, which include 4,135 metric tones of assorted improved seeds, 220,977 litres of assorted crop protection chemicals and 52,000 metric tones of fertilizers.
Other benefits are 2,000 units of irrigation pumps, 600 nos. irrigation wells, 350 animal traction packages, 357 bull fatling packages, 100 small holder dairy packages and lots of other supports so as meet the food demand of the state and the federation.
In addition, large scale farmers were provided with 259,168 metric tones of subsidized fertilizers, 216 nos. tractors with associated implements, payment of compensation to bird flu affected farmers and other relevant interventions, all these efforts are towards enhancing food security and also meeting one of the Seven-Point Agenda of the federal government.
