Food crisis: Katsina releases subsidized grains to public
From MU’AWUYA B. IDRIS, Katsina
Katsina state government has commenced the sale of grains at affordable price to the public.
A bag of maize is sold at N3,200 while a bag of sorghum is sold for N2,400 respectively.
Speaking Wednesday while launching the sale of the grains, at Katsina local government secretariat, Governor Ibrahim Shehu Shema said the measure was meant to cushion the effect of high food prices.
Alhaji Shema said government had released 2, 400 metric tonnes of grains worth N294. 5 million for sale to the public.
He further said the state government had sourced another 2, 700 metric tonnes of grains worth N96.8 million from the federal government.
“Both Katsina and federal government are highly concerned with the problem and committed to control the situation, “he said.
Governor Shema explained that his administration would use Community Development Committees (CDCs) at local government councils for the sale of the grains.
“I assure you that the grains will reach nooks and corners of the state,” he emphasized.
Governor Shema called on local government council chairmen to put fear of Allah in their minds and ensure that the grains reach the target public.
In his speech, chairman of Katsina local government council, Alhaji Bala Saulawa, commended the state government for providing the grains for sale to the general public.
Alhaji Saulawa said his council would sell the grains at the subsidized price of N100 per mudu.
