Guinea-worm:Gowon reawakens governors
From BALA ABUBAKAR GUSAU
Former Nigeria head of state, General Yakubu Gowon has urged Zamfara state governor to implore possible ways of eradicating guinea worm among the communities in the state.
General Gowon gave the charge Wednesday when he paid a country visit on Governor Mahmud Aliyu Shinkafi at the Government House, Gusau.
He said the call became necessary in order to prevent the endemic within the communities especially those with water borne disease.
The former head of state stressed that every government in the country should ensure surveillance to all areas affected by the disease in order to eliminate it once and for all.
General Gowon, however, expressed happiness with Zamfara state government for its effort to get rid of the disease.
Responding, the deputy governor, Alhaji Muktari Ahmad Anka on behalf of that governor, assured the former head of state of the readiness of the government towards eradicating guinea worm endemic before the expiration of their tenure.
He also told the former head of state that government has established the Directorate of Rural Water Supply in an effort to supply all communities with potable drinking water.
Alhaji Anka also told the visiting guest that the Shinkafi administration has approved the establishment of rural health agency to ensure health care delivery system in the state.
