Gratuities: Sokoto govt. approves N220m
The Sokoto state government has approved N220 million for the payment of nine months arrears of gratuities to its workers.
The state's Head of Service,Alhaji Abubakar Wali, said this while speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) yesterday in Sokoto.
Wali said the outstanding arrears of November and December 2009 as well as January 2010 would be paid in March 2010.
He said a five-man committee has already been set up to carry out the payment billed to commence today (Thursday).
Wali said the delay in payment was not deliberate, blaming it on some hitches which he said government had addressed.
``Let me assure the civil servants and the retirees that the state government has always been in the forefront of ensuring their welfare,’’ he said.
He pledged that gratuities would henceforth be paid as at when due, adding that ’’the ugly development will not be allowed to happen again.
`` The state government is aware of the hardship the delay has caused and I am hereby apologising on its behalf.''
