I’m not running for governorship--Ekweremadu
Chief Ike Ekweremadu, Deputy Senate President, says he has no plans to run for governor in Enugu State in 2011.
Ekweremadu made the call at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rally held by Enugu West Senatorial zone in Oji River Local Government headquarters in solidarity for Governor Sullivan Chime.
The deputy senate president said that insinuation and allegations from some quarters that he was going to contest the seat with Chime were false.
According to him, ``I am not contesting for the governorship position with Governor Chime. I will personally lead the campaign for his re- election in 2011’’.
Ekweremadu maintained that Chime had been his friend from their university days, stressing that their relationship had been cordial.
The deputy senate president, however, called on the people of the state to support the governor in his effort at transforming the state.
In a message to the occasion, the National Chairman of PDP, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, described Chime as the “pride of the East” who had done the party proud through his achievements in the state.
According to Ogbulafor, who was represented by the South-East zonal chairman, Chief Olisa Metu, Chime stands the chances of ruling again in the state because of his achievements.
“He also has the capability of producing other governors for the party in the South-East zone come 2011”, the PDP chairman said.
The Minister of State for Agriculture, Mrs Fidelia Njeze, who hails from the state, said that the crowd that gathered at the event showed the people’s support and appreciation of the governor’s performance.
The state Chairman of the party, Chief Vita Abba, called on the people to support the ideals of the PDP and its efforts to enthrone good governance in the country.
In his response, the governor thanked the people of the state for their unflinching support for his administration and the party.
Chime prayed that God would continue to bless the state and promised that he would continue to do his best in moving the state forward.
The event featured goodwill messages from the legislature, ALGON, women groups, as well as cultural displays.
