Japan pledges $2bn to Africa this year
Japan on Wednesday pledged two billion dollars in grant and technical assistance to Africa this year, the Prime Minister of Japan, Mr Taro Aso, annouced in Sirte, Libya.
He made the pledge in a goodwill message he sent to the 13th Ordinary session of AU.
Taro said his country had in the last three mopnths delivered food and humanitarian assistance worth 300 million dollars to African countries.
The Prime Minister said Japan would soon deploy survey missions to Africa to identify and prepare possible projects for assistance.
He said in its effort to ensure Africa was assisted to meet the challenges of the current economic meltdown his government had solicited the views of some African countries on areas that they needed assistance and conveyed such to
the G20 meeting which held in London in April.
He called on other members of the G8 to fulfill their pledges to miigate the effects of the economic crisis being felt by Africans.
``It is crucial that development partners, including Japan fulfill the commitments they have made and implement them without delay as promised at the London Summit.''
