JGSG earmarks N5bn for social projects

The Jigawa State Executive Council on Wednesday during its regular meeting, approved the release of about N5 billion for various development projects such as water supply, road construction, purchase of drugs, computers and renovation of classrooms.
This was made known by the state commissioner for information, youth, sports and culture, Alhaji Aminu Muhammad Gumel while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the meeting at Government House, Dutse.
He said, out of the this amount, the sum of N2.9 billion has been approved to the state Universal Basic Education Board for the renovation of a total of 400 primary schools across the state.
Alhaji Muhammad noted that the sum of N400 million will be spent for the training of teachers at various universities and other higher institutions of learning while the sum of N52 million has been set aside for the purchase of 300 table computers for distribution to 10 selected secondary schools in the state, pointing out that the state has secured 100 sets of computers from the Universal Service Provision, the federal government programme of the NCC for distribution to 13 selected senior secondary schools in the state plus a laptop computer each.
The commissioner disclosed that the state government paid N1.4 billion to UBEC as counterpart fund for 2007, 2008 and 2009 while the federal government gave the state similar amount of money.
He revealed that the council in session has also approved the sum of N1.64 billion for the Ashfalt overlaying of Gujungu to Hadejia road while the sum of N109.1 million was for the solar electrification of four villages in the three senatorial zones of the state.
Alhaji Aminu Muhammad stated further that the council has also approved for the release of the sum of N250 million for the improvement and upgrading of water schemes in Dutse, the state capital and five other major cities namely, Hadejia, Gumel, Kazaure, Ringim and Birnin-Kudu. The sum of N45 million has also been approved by the council to the state ministry of health for the purchase of anti-malaria, drugs for injecting and distribution to children below the age of five years free of charge.
