Jogana footwear coy re-opens soon…As KNSG, Gezawa LG intervene
By ALIYU UMAR
AS a result of the intervention of Governor Ibrahim Shekarau of Kano state and series of meetings between the management of Standard Footwear and Plastic Nigeria Limited, Jogana and Committee of Stakeholders, it was resolved that a time-table for the re-opening of the factory and formation of a union be finalized.
According to a statement issued from the office of the state commissioner of commerce, Alhaji Ahmad Ibrahim Yakasai yesterday, the decision considered by the management to re-open the company followed concerted efforts by the state government.
The state government therefore urged the management and the stakeholders, comprising Nigeria Labour Congress, Kano branch, the National Union of Chemical, Footwear, Leather and Non-Metalic Products Employees as well as the federal ministry of labour to cooperate and ensure the success of the accord.
It could be recalled that the factory closed down recently as a result of moves by its workers to form an organized trade union.
In a related development, the chairman of Gezawa local government council, Alhaji Abdullahi Yahaya Tsamiyar Kara has pledged to do all he can to restore the cordial relationship existing between the warring parties.
In an interview with Daily Triumph, in his office Monday, the chairman said that as he is totally against lawlessness, he is equally against exploitation, as such, the concerned persons should advance dialogue for a lasting solution.
According to him, he had already tabled his appeal before the executive governor of Kano state, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau who in turn set up a committee under his commerce commissioner, Alhaji Ahmad Ibrahim Yakasai to meet with the affected persons to resolve the issue.
Tsamiyar Kara further explained that, on its part the council is appealing to the management of the company to exercise patience for a while so as not to tamper with the social, economic and security of the people of Gezawa and neighbouring areas on the employment of the company.
He went on to reveal that he is not against forming a workers union provided it is aimed at catering and protecting the interest of the workers, but added: ‘’I detest anything that will give birth to crisis or lawlessness.’’
On his stewardship and political ambition, the chairman referred Daily Triumph to the teeming populace of the area, saying that they are in good position to weigh and assess his achievements, stressing that seeing is believing.
He maintained that as a Shari’a-oriented administration, Gezawa local government follows the footsteps of Malam Ibrahim Shekarau whose cardinal objectives remain human development followed by physical development and communal efforts.
At 40-years, he said, he has been able to fulfill his electioneering campaign promises in the provision of potable drinking water, agriculture, healthcare delivery, education, electricity and youth empowerment across the area.
