Katsina market fire: Victims yet to receive govt’s assistance
From MU’AWUYA B. IDRIS, Katsina
Barely, three months after the fire disaster at Katsina Central Market, traders affected are yet to receive assistance from the government.
The affected traders numbering about 78 are currently out of business due to heavy loss during the fire incident.
Our correspondent who visited the market yesterday learnt only few of the affected traders still sell goods by some to earn a living.
It was learnt that majority of the affected traders depend on assistance from other traders within the market to survive.
It was gathered that although the state traders association has generated about N4million, which was disbursed to the affected traders, the amount given to them was however, too meager.
Some of the affected traders who spoke to Daily Triumph appealed to government to urgently come to their assistance. “We are calling on the government to assist us as most of us are out of business,” they added.
A source close to the traders association informed Daily Triumph that the association has written a letter to remind government to come to the aid of the traders.
The source said although government has set up a committee to identify victims of the inferno and provide assistance, however, the assistance is yet to come.
All effort to contact the state’s commissioner of commerce on the issue proved abortive.
