KDSG to drill 62 solar boreholes
Determined to meet the water needs of the people, the Kaduna state government has said that it will drill 62 solar boreholes in three major towns.
The commissioner for water resources, Mr Tsahiru Bako, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna that the boreholes would be sunk in Kaduna, Zaria and Kanfanchan.
He said the decision to drill the boreholes was to alleviate the suffering of the people in sourcing for water.
Bako expressed regret over the fire outbreak at the Malali water plant which had brought untold hardship to the people.
He said the transformer, which could not be procured locally, would arrive in the country in June together with the accessories
and gave assurance the water plant would be repaired as soon as the equipment arrived.
According to him, the plant currently renders skeletal water services to communities on rotational bases.
In addition, water tankers were being used to distribute water in the metropolis to assuage the effect of the inferno, he said.
Meanwhile, residents of Barnawa and Narayi in Kaduna metropolis have called on the state government to repair the broken down water works to resolve the lingering water scarcity in the area which started in November 2007.
A resident of the area, Mr Funsho Ibrahim, told NAN that the only source of water for people in the area was one functional borehole.
According to him, a small bucket of water sells for N10 while a jerrycan costs N40.
He said that residents spent not less than N300 daily on water and called on the state government to effect repair of the water treatment plant.
