KNSG, NPC collaborate on births, deaths registration
KANO state government in conjunction with the National Population Commission (NPC), is conducting massive birth and death registration free of charge in order to update its population figure .
In addition to at least two existing registration centres in each local government area of the state, the government intends to create 10 more registration centres to facilitate the exercise.
A press statement issued from the NPC and signed by Balarabe M. Nasidi, urged parents to visit the nearest centre in order to register their wards and children for issuance of certificate immediately.
All the available registration centres it said could easily be known and located by contacting the NPC offices in each of the local government secretariats.
It has been observed with great concern that many of the births from October 1988 to date have not been fully captured.
“In view of this, parents and guardians are advised to register all their wards and children as the birth certificate is very useful for school enrolment, employment opportunity, voting rights, obtaining driving license, national identity card, access to health care, access to inheritance, international travel documents as well as assurance policy and claims,” the statement added.
It said death registration helps the government to know the causes of deaths and plan for their effective control and gives legal authority for inheritance.
“The registration of the birth of a child is his/her fundamental rights,” NPC added. “It accords the child identity and recognition by the authority.”
The statement said every child is expected to be registered so that an up to date population data could be realised to enhance planning purposes for both economic and social development of the state.
