KNSG orders ministries, parastatals to return unspent monies

KANO state commissioner of project monitoring and evaluation, Alhaji Ibrahim Garba has ordered the state ministries, parastatals and other relevant government agencies to return to government treasury, any amount approved for project implementation, but which could not be expended.
The commissioner gave the directive while briefing newsmen in his office yesterday, explaining that government has released the sum of N5.4 billion for expenditure on capital projects as approved by the government between the months of April, May and June this year.
He noted that the ministry of project monitoring had established the monitoring exercise to ensure that state ministries, parastatals and government agencies have utilized the amount given by the state government to carry out capital projects in their respective areas.
He therefore appealed to them to cooperate with his ministry to enable the contractors assigned the projects to do their works within the period, adding that failure for the ministries and their agencies to start the projects will force the ministry of finance to withdraw the funds.
Alhaji Garba revealed that the ministry of environment had received a total of N63 million for clearing of drainages within the state, N19,199,000 for the procurement of plants for plantations in this year’s rainy season to fight desertification in addition to N5,800,000 to support the programme while the sum of N9,960,804 was approved for the renovation of School of Hygiene.
The ministry of land and physical planning got the sum of N175,493,550; ministry of agriculture N880,000,000; ministry of commerce N9,984,953.73; while the ministry of water resources was given the sum of N55,680,160.
Others according to him, are ministry of rural and community development, N676,383,972.61; ministry of women affairs N11 million; ministry of works N283,812,572.68 and ministry of health got the sum of N82,928,768.07.
‘’The tourism board received the sum of N7,110,084.04; REB N195,514,244.50 and constituency projects N886,983,958.70,” Garba added.
The commissioner however, commended the same ministries, parastatals and government agencies for the maximum cooperation accorded to his ministry, saying the state government has released the sum of N38 million for the installation of new street lights from Malam Aminu Kano International Airport and already the sum of N11 million has been released to the contractor in this regard.
He, however, said though the airport project is a federal government affair, the work will assist beautify the state, arguing that the state government is committed towards helping federal establishments in the state.
