KNSG orders LGs to register children at birth
By UMAR DANLADI ADO
KANO state government has directed the 44 local government councils in the state to ensure prompt registration of children birth.
The state deputy governor, Engr. Abdullahi Tijjani Muhammad Gwarzo gave the directive when he received members of the Task Force on Massive Birth Registra-tion Enlightenment Campaign on a courtesy visit yesterday.
Engr. Gwarzo emphasised the need for all and sundry especially local government councils to double effort in enlightening the ruralites with a view to making them fully understand and prepare to participate in the child birth registration exercise.
According to him, no society would progress without having an up to date data and statistics of its population, adding that such exercise gives ample opportunity to any government towards providing developmental projects.
Engr. Gwarzo further explained that given the composition of the committee members, he is optimistic the effort towards sensitising the people on the exercise would achieve its objective.
Earlier, the chairman of the committee, Alhaji Sani Dawaki Gabasawa had said that his committee was established to monitor the registration of child birth in the state.
Alhaji Dawaki Gabasawa noted with dismay that with available reports, Kano is rated among the least states in terms of registration of child birth.
According to him, the present situation whereby local government councils neglect the exercise despite government campaign on the importance of the exercise is a thing of concern.
He stressed the importance of the exercise as its acceptance will assist the state government towards planning and executing projects that have direct bearing on the people.
Alhaji Gabasawa disclosed that his committee has six months to submit its report.
