Movement tasks NASS on states creation
By SADIQ ABDULLATEEF
The National Assembly has been called upon to appreciate the need to include the issue of amending the portion that deals with states creation in the proposed constitutional amendment exercise, to simplify genuine aspirations for the realisation of agitators dream.
The call was made by the National Chairman of Association of State Creation Movements, Elder (Dr.) Emmanuel Adaelu (MFR) during a press conference at the Press Centre, Kano yesterday.
Dr. Adaelu said the National Association of State Movements in Nigeria came into being, for the sole purpose of uniting the various movements across the country and for a concerted approach to the attainment of the very difficult constitutional right, which started with 18 state movements across the length and breadth of the country.
“And though the various movements may differ in their interests and reasons for their respective agitations, but their coming together under this umbrella has so far created an enabling condition for understanding and appreciation from individual movements despite their divergent interests,” he said.
He explained that their coming to Kano to hold such a meeting will reveal the kind of unity of purpose binding the various movements. While in Kano he said, they intend to set the ball rolling towards making the authorities concerned and other key players in state creation to begin to set in motion processes that will lead to the eventual realisation of their collective aspirations.
He also expressed appreciation with what he described as the wisdom of past leaders, who saw the medium of states creation in Nigeria as the most important vehicle and catalyst for growth and development of the constituent units of the federation, hence the creation of up to 36 states. It is in this regard Adaelu noted, that they hope the present leadership will equally create additional states in Nigeria.
The ASM leader then expressed profound gratitude to the joint efforts of Ghari and Tiga States Movements, Kano state government, National Assembly members in Kano, Kano Emirate Council, Kano State House of Assembly members, local government chairmen, business community, the ulama and the Kano community in general.
In a closing remark, the chairman of the Tiga State Movement, Comrade Baffa Sani Gaya urged journalists as the voice of the masses to relay the information gathered in the meeting to the public, while thanking them for their continued support and cooperation to the movements in the state.
