NERC poised to improve nation’s power supply

THE Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has said that the commission is poised to change the present inadequate power supply to its normal condition through the renewable energy development of Jatropha plant which will cost the government and stakeholders N177 billion.
Chairman and Chief Executive of the Commission, Dr. Ransome E. Owan disclosed this recently during a courtesy visit to the Emir of Kano, Alhaji (Dr.) Ado Bayero to intimate him on the commission’s meeting holding in Kano aimed at reviving power supply in the country.
According to him, with Jatropha plant, there would be an improvement in the area of power supply in the country, saying the commission has mapped out new strategies to use the plant which is a source of providing hydro diesel.
Dr. Owan said in order to achieve the set objective, the product has been taken to President Umar Musa Yar’adua and he has welcomed that initiative.
He said through this initiative, there will be an increase in employment opportunities and quality of life will improve as power supply would be enhanced.
He added that they decided to hold the meeting in Kano because it is rich in the produce and expressed satisfaction that tackling power problem is the first in the 7-point agenda of President Yar’adua.
Responding, the Emir of Kano, Alhaji (Dr.) Ado Bayero who expressed satisfaction with the development and expressed his support toward the success of the project, and expressed the hope that power problem will soon be solved.
