New FRSC boss doffs hat for KNSG
By SALISU MARAFA
NORTHERN governors have been urged to emulate Kano state government by executing developmental projects.
The appeal was made by the newly appointed chairman of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Colonel Lawal Gwadabe (rtd) when he paid a courtesy call on Kano state deputy governor, Engr. Abdullahi Tijjani Muhammad Gwarzo in his office yesterday.
Colonel Gwadabe commended Kano state government for creating eight centres for free medical treatment for the victims of road accidents and recent road rehabilitation exercise.
The FRSC boss however, expressed dismay on the fact that despite efforts to reduce road accidents, the situation still persists alarmingly.
“Your Excellency, the United Nations data showed that 1.3 million people died from road accidents and 50 million injured or disabled every year,” Colonel Gwadabe explained, stressing the need for a collaborative effort between the government, the commission and the general public to address the situation.
“In order to achieve our socio-economic development including meeting the targets of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and allow our ordinary people to feel safe on our roads, the sion (FRSC) must be given the support to reduce the number of road traffic accidents on our roads,” Colonel Gwadabe stressed.
Gwadabe disclosed that the FRSC will embark on enlightment campaign to sensitize the public on the need to adhere to traffic laws and regulations.
He also attributed the large increase of vehicles in the country as well as poorly-designed roads as the major contributing factors to road accidents which rate Nigeria with the highest record of road traffic death in Africa.
He appealed to motorcycle riders to comply with helmet regulations in order to save their lives as well as reduce road accidents.
Responding, the deputy governor, Engr. Abdullahi Tijjani Muhammad Gwarzo, advised the commission to explore other means of sensitizing the road users on the importance of road regulations before enforcing any laws to roads users.
Engr. Gwarzo then stressed the need for the federal government to ensure constant road maintenance of the highways which have become death traps to many motorists in the country.Federal Road Safety Commis
