Nigeria’s economy yet to acheive desired target--Comm

THE Kwara state commissioner for planning and economic development, Alhaji AbdulFatah Ahmed has said that in spite of all efforts made since 1960, the Nigerian economy is yet to achieve the much desired goals of rapid growth and development.
Ahmed made the disclosure at the weekend at the dinner night of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Kwara state chapter.
He said Nigeria’s case appears to illustrate the preposition that abundance of resources may not be a sufficient condition for development.
He said some of the major problems we have faced as nation are corruption and mismanagement of resources among others.
The commissioner noted that in Kwara state, various economic and fiscal policies have been designed by the state government to address the economic down turn and charged them to imbibe and conform to the rules of the professional conduct guiding the profession in the lime light for recognition.
“As accountants, you are expected to live above board in the face of crisis in the profession, which as you are all aware of, is usually a fallout of corporate failure and the prevalence of corruption and sharp practices that have today become a common feature in our system” he said.
He urged them to maintain excellence, honesty, transparency and reinforcement for their personal and professional relationship with the public, knowing fully, well that as ambassadors of the profession and conscience of the nation, whatever they do or fail to do, will have implication on the image and reputation of the institute and the civil service where they work.
