NLC commends FG’s anti-corruption crusade
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) yesterday in Abuja commended the federal government for its anti-corruption efforts.
It made the commendation in an open letter to President Umaru Yar’Adua and the leadership of the National Assembly (NASS).
The letter was signed by the President and General Secretary of the Congress, Abdulwaheed Omar and John Odah respectively.
It was presented to NASS by the NLC during its anti-corruption march to the Three Arms Zone, Abuja.
“The reversal of the sale of Port Harcourt and Kaduna refineries and the steel companies in Ajaokuta, Itakpe and Aiadja are commendable actions.
“It gives a clear signal that corruption will not be tolerated under this dispensation,” NLC said.
It commended NASS for instituting the public hearings on such areas as power, agriculture and the FCTA.
NLC, however, said the probe would be inconclusive without a judicial commission of inquiry to recover the diverted public funds.
“Such a commission can comprehensively inquire into the corrupt practices, recover mismanaged or embezzled funds; this will generally restore people’s confidence in government and governance .”
Receiving the letter on behalf of the Senate President, Sen. Ado Audu assured labour that NASS would pursue the probes to their logical conclusion.
“No stone will be left unturned, the law is supreme and no one is above it.
“We will not take this probe for granted, we are ready to probe any Nigerian and bring to the book, if found wanting,” he said.
He expressed appreciation of labour’s support for the crusade, saying: “You have motivated the NASS and instilled courage in us.”
