2011: PDP Senators demand automatic ticket
PDP Senators yesterday demanded for an automatic return ticket from the leadership of the party to the Senate in the 2011.
A statement signed by the Press Secretary to the Senate President David Mark, Mr Paul Mumeh, said that the Senators made their demands known at an interactive session with the Chairman of the PDP Prince Vincent Ogbulafor.
The statement said that the Senators justified their demand on the grounds that the experiences and huge resources already invested in them on the art of legislative assignment would be wasted if not given opportunities to return.
``Flagging off the request, Senate President on behalf of his colleagues said the
continued high turnover of lawmakers to the legislative house at every election, does not give room for the growth of the legislature.
``Unlike the executive and the judiciary, the legislature which is the hallmark of democracy needed to be sustained with growing experiences of the legislators,’’ Mark was quoted as saying.
The statement added ``the President of the Senate believes that the present crop of Senators have proved to be reliable, competent and knowledgeable, besides the harmony between them and the executive arm of government.
``This harmonious, peaceful and cordiality, are needed ingredients for development. We must sustain an experienced and stable legislature which is the needed antidote for the sustenance and growth of democracy”.
Mark gave the assurance that the Senate would cooperate with the executive in the discharge of its service delivery to the people, saying ``the Senate is mindful of its independence and legislative duties, we shall not compromise on this.’’
The statement also quoted Ogbulafor as commending both the Senate and the executive arm of government for their cordial relationship so far and called for sustenance.
Ogbulafor stated that the PDP government has lived up to its billings and promised that the issue of automatic ticket would be considered in due course.
