Sanctions: Yar'adua receives delegation from Niger Republic
President Umaru Yar’Adua, the Chairman of the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, on Tuesday received a delegation from President Mamadou Tanjah of Niger Republic.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the delegation was in Abuja to discuss the sanctions imposed on the country by ECOWAS.
Yar’adua on October 21 announced the suspension of the country from ECOWAS for failing to heed the advice of the organisation not to conduct parliamentary elections.
The delegation, headed by Prime Minister Ali Badjo, met behind closed doors with Yar’Adua and former Head of State and the Chief Mediator on Niger crisis, Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar.Speaking with the State House Correspondents shortly after the meeting in Abuja, the Leader of the Nigerien delegation, Ali Badjo, said they came to consult with the Yar'Adua on the sanction.
Badjo, who narrated the historical links between Niger and Nigeria, said the two countries ``are brothers and neighbours" and as such, Nigeria should assist in finding solution to the problem.
Also the Chief Mediator, Abubakar, said the resolution of the political crisis threatening the peace and security of Niger Republic was paramount in the minds of the ECOWAS leaders.
``You are aware that ECOWAS has imposed sanctions on Niger, which the African Union (AU) has endorsed.
