Senate sets up constitution review committee
The Senate yesterday constituted a 37- member committee to review the 1999 constitution.
Senate President David Mark announced the names of the members at the plenary session.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the members cut across the six geo-political zones of the country with a Senator representing each state and FCT.
The members include Senators Folarin Teslim, Olalenkan Mustapha, Iyiola Omisore, Kila Adefemi, Gbenga Ogunniya and Olorunnimbe Mamora representing the South-West zone.
Senators Ike Ekweremadu, Nkechi Nwogu, Joy Emodi, Julius Ucha, and Izunaso Osita are to represent the states from the South-East.
The Senators to represent the South-South zone include Effiong Bob, Heineken Lokpobiri, Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN) Patrick Osakwe, Ehigie Uzamere and Lee Maeba.
Senators Saminu Turaki, Ahmad Makarfi, Kanti Bello, Adamu Aliero, Gada Umar, Mohammed Bello and Sani Rufa’i are to represent the North-West zone.
The Senators representing the North-East include Mohammed Mana, Tawar Wada, Joel Dalami, Ahmed Lawan, Suleiman Nazif and Maji Lawan.
The North-Central zone has Senators Joseph Akaageeger, Smart Adeyemi, Gbemisola Saraki, Awasu Kuta, Gyang Dantong, Abubakar Sodangi and Sidi Ali.
The Deputy Senate President, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu from the South-East zone is also to serve as the chairman of the committee.
Meanwhile, President Umaru Musa Yar’adua yesterday presented the FCT 2008 budget of N69.45 billion to the Senate.
Yar’adua in a letter read by Senate President David Mark, said that emphasis was placed on infrastructure development, while recurrent expenditure was de-emphasised.
The breakdown, shows that N15.77 billion was proposed for personnel cost, N9.72 billion for overhead expenditure and N43.96 as capital vote.
Yar’adua also requested the Senate to confirm the nomination of Hajia Fati Kake’nna as a part time member of the Police Service Commission.
In another development, the Senate returned the report of its health committee on the National Health Bill for further legislative action.
