Shekarau tasks FG on oil deregulation
By NASIRU MUHAMMAD
GOVERNOR Ibrahim Shekarau of Kano state has appealed to the federal government to provide something that will cushion the effects of its planned deregulation in the oil sector.
``Before you implement it, what cushioning do you have for it. Where do you take the subsidy to after you withdraw it,” he queried.
“The National Assembly that is 80 per cent PDP told us that the federal government has not implemented 25 per cent of its budget for two years,” the governor also noted.
Malam Shekarau who dropped the hint last Saturday when members of the state Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), paid him Sallah homage, explained that if that is what obtains, one will begin to wonder where does the amount generated from the subsidy will go.
The governor further expressed displeasure that no refinery is working in the country at the moment, stating that the country realize on 100 per cent importation of petrol.
Meanwhile, Malam Shekarau has said that though some parochial politicians always argue that public service is a small faction of the entire population, they forget that it is the wheel on which the entire community revolves.
He said if the 30,000 or 35,000 workers in the state decides not to cooperate, there can never be any project and policies of government that can be realized or implemented.
Malam Shekarau thanked the leadership of the NLC that are within the state civil service for their cooperation and understanding and noted with great pleasure the reminders the union made to him over the pledge he earlier made to provide members of some unions with buses.
He promised to redeem the pledge by providing the unions with the 12 remaining buses during the next financial year.
Commenting, the acting chairman of the NLC, Comrade Auwalu Mudi Yakasai, said they are in full support of the state government’s intention to provide the state with an independent power station.
He commended the state government for giving the workers what they deserve and hoped that the government will continue in this direction.
