ASUU/FG
face-off: NANS plans mass protests
By HASSAN MUSA
K/MATA
THE National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), has given
the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of
Universities (ASUU), up to June 30 to resolve their differences
or face mass protests.
The association, in a statement signed by its president, Comrade
Baballe Bashir, a copy of which was made available to Sunday
Triumph, however, called on Nigerian students to remain calm and
be law-abiding until they hear from NANS national secretariat.
It noted that the current industrial action by ASUU has raised
tension in the academic community and the society in general.
The statement further explained that the face-off between ASUU
and the federal government is a stumbling block to the
realisation of Vision 2020, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
and the government’s 7-Point Agenda.
NANS therefore condemned in totality, the manner in which the
federal government is handling the ASUU matter which led to the
industrial action.
It then called the government to fulfil its obligation of proper
funding of education, academic freedom, university autonomy and
other demands by ASUU.
