okays Nigeria for UN Security Council seat
The AU Candidature Committee has endorsed Nigeria for the UN
Security Council Non-Permanent Seat, the News Agency of Nigeria
(NAN) reports.
Mr Ayo Olukanni, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs, disclosed this in a telephone interview with NAN from
Sirte, Libya, venue of the 13th ordinary session of the AU.
“The AU Candidature Committee, meeting on the sidelines of the
ongoing AU summit, has endorsed Nigeria’s candidature for
election into the non-permanent seat of the UN Security Council.
“This follows the endorsement of Nigeria by ECOWAS at the 36th
ordinary session in Abuja on June 22.
“With this endorsement, Nigeria is practically cleared for
election into the UN seat at elections to be held at the UN
General Assembly later in the year,” Olukanni said.
He also said the Executive Council of the AU, which commenced
its meeting on Thursday, would consider decisions reached by the
Council of Ministers.
The decisions include how to advance the Millennium Development
Goals, negotiations on the Economic Partnership Agreements and
of a Pan African University.
Others are the UN climate Change Convention and the Kyoto
Protocol.
Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan is leading Nigeria’s delegation
to the summit.
