Kidnappings worry Governor Orji
From GAMBO KANNO FUBARA,Umuahia
Abia state governor, Chief Theodore Ahamefula Orji, has
regretted that the state has become notorious for kidnappings
and observed that though the menace did not start in the state,
many young men have taken to the crime because it is deemed
lucrative.
Speaking while condoling the Commissioner of Police over the
death of five of his men by hoodlums in Aba , at the police
headquarters in Umuahia , Chief Theodore Orji who said he was
saddened by the unfortunate event extended his government’s
condolence also to the families of the slain Policemen .
He added that kidnapping is now a national menace and a
cankerworm that no responsible government should tolerate.
The governor said that though kidnapping has eaten deep into the
fabrics of the society , the state government is
making every effort to ensure that the crime is curbed .
He stated that despite the criticisms about the security
situation in the state, it will be unfair to blame him since his
duty is to complement the efforts of the police , while the
police has the statutory responsibility of fighting crime .
Chief T. A. Orji then restated his call for the police to be
adequately equipped to discharge its responsibilities, observing
that the sophistication of the kidnappers has surpassed the
ability of the police to grapple with.
He urged the officers and men of the Abia state police command
to be more cautious as the police has become target for
criminals and also advised them to be steadfast in ensuring the
ban on the use of motorcycle in the state metropolis.
Responding the state police commissioner Mr Edgar Tam Nanakumo
thanked the governor for the visit and assured him that his men
will not be deterred from carrying out their duties
According to him, the Inspector General of Police , Mr. Mike
Okiro has put in place measures to stem the tide of kidnapping
in the south-east states by the reestablishment of road blocks
and called on Abians to give the police support rather than
castigating them .
