‘We are in power to implement Sharia’

KANO state governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, has said that he and his government are in power in the state courtesy of their promise to implement Islamic legal system.
The governor who made the remark Saturday during the launching of an Islamic book titled: “Sharia‘ar Musulunci, Muhimmancinta da Manufofinta,’’ said in his government’s effort to see the full implementation of Islamic legal system in the state, it formed establishments like the Sharia‘a Commission, Zakat and A Daidaita Sahu, among others.
The governor who was represented at the occasion by the state Attorney General and commissioner of justice, Barr. Aliyu Umar, explained that government has understood that Shari’a is not only restricted to capital punishment, but a complete way of life.
He further explained that to add to the success of the judiciary, the state government had assured it (the judiciary) of implementing anything brought to it that aims at moving the sector forward.
He gave the assurance that government would continue with what it is doing of not interfering with any judgment delivered by any judge, saying what it will only do that if it is not satisfied with any judgment appealing against it.
“The government will not witchhunt any judge, or any judicial staff as a result of any judgement against the government. If the government feels there is any lapse on any judgement, it will simply file an appeal,’’ he noted.
He called on the general public to do same if they are not satisfied with any judgement, rather than resorting to blackmail against any judge.
Governor Shekarau gave a pat on the back on the author of the book and called on others to emulate him.
Earlier, Justice A.B. Wali (rtd), former Justice of the Supreme Court, had called on the state government to consider having a dress code for Sharia’a judges, as well as provide infrastructure at the Shari’a courts in the state.
Commenting on the issue, the state commissioner of information, Barr. Haruna Isa Dederi, represented by the director of information, Alhaji Bello Sani Galadanchi, gave assurance that the state government would continue to provide people in the state with the dividends of democracy, stating that, that is why government is busy constructing roads and providing social amenities to the people.
The representative of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji (Dr) Ado Bayero, Wazirin Kano, Sheikh (Malam) Isa Waziri, had called for more publications of this nature in Hausa for the benefit of the people in the state.
In an interview with newsmen, the chief launcher at the occasion, Alhaji Auwalu Rimi Mai-Shadda, called on traders in Kano to cut down prices of their goods with the approach of the month of Ramadan, so that the poor could observe the period with ease.
About N6 million was realized at the occasion, with the highest donation of N5 million coming from the chief launcher.
