We banned street fuel hawking to save lives--–Sardauna

KANO state governor, Malam (Dr.) Ibrahim Shekarau Sardauna has stated that government decided to ban the sale of petroleum products along the streets due to the danger it posses to the lives and properties of the people.
Malam Shekarau who made the statement yesterday during the Hawan Nassarawa said: ``If the government allows the trend to continue, it will be neglecting one of its major duties of safeguarding the lives of its people.
``It is a known fact that that a life of an individual is better than any property before God. In the last few weeks, a household perished through an inferno caused by petrol fire,'' he explained.
The governor maintained that the state government is aware that fuel scarcity is what causes its hawking among major roads, stating that the government is also aware that some people get the means of their livelihood through selling it, assuring that the government will soon take measures for a better way to approach the issue after a committee it set up submits its report.
He, therefore, appealed to those who engage in the Bunburutu business to adhere to the directives the government will later issue out, and advised them to be cautious while handling fuel and how they keep it.
Shekarau also called on the consumers to bear with the government on the action it will take on the issue due to the temporary hardship they may experience, stating that his government will take measures to cushion the effect of that action on their day to day activities.
The Sardaunan Kano at the same time expressed delight with the calls by the emir of Kano, on the general public to allow their children to be vaccinated against polio disease, which has maimed uncountable number of children in the world, something which he said, has also prompted the United Nations and experts in the area of health to eradicate it.
``God willing, the state government and the emirate council will continue to give support to all initiatives that are geared toward eradicating polio as did other countries.
``I am using this forum to call on parents within the urban and rural areas to allow their children to take polio vaccine at all times, because it is said that a stich in time saves nine,'' he said.
On roads expansion in the metropolis, Shekarau said it is meant to promote economic activities, calling on motorists to obey traffic regulations by driving with caution.
The governor used the occasion to thank the emir over the Sardaunan Kano title he conferred on him on behalf of himself and his family, saying this has further shown the love the emir has for him.
``The title was conferred on me on the 5th of November 2009 which conincides with my 54th birthday,'' the governor said.
In his speech at the occasion, the Emir of Kano, Alhaji (Dr.) Ado Bayero, expressed happiness with the number of projects the state government is executing in all nooks and crannies of the state despite the economic melt down.
The emir then called on the governments at all levels to strive toward providing roads, water and electricity to the people, which he said will better their lives, and prayed for a lasting peace in the state.business to adhere to the directives the government will later issue out, and advised them to be cautious while handling fuel and how they keep it.
