We’re ready to review Hisbah laws-- Gafasa
By USMAN GWADABE
KANO state House of Assembly has directed the state Hisbah Command to submit to it laws that cause hitches in the command’s operation for possible amendment.
Speaker Abdul-Aziz Garba Gafasa gave the directive when members of the command led by its part-time chairman, Malam Adamu Gwaram, paid a courtesy visit to the House, charging them to discharge their duties within the stipulated laws of the state and the nation’s constitution.
Gafasa maintained that individuals and groups who were challenging the operations of the Hisbah guards in the state were only challenging the state lawmakers and the executive, pointing out that enemies of Sharia legal system within and outside the nation were watching the Hisbah guard’s activities with a view to pin pointing their mistakes and portraying them to the public as violators of human rights.
The Speaker pointed out that had the Hisbah guards not doing their job effectively, the complaints being received by the House and other relevant agencies about their operation would not have occurred.
He therefore urged them to sustain the tempo and imbibe the culture of exercising patience to achieve the set goal of full Sharia implementation in the state.
Hon. Gafasa assured the command of the legislator’s total support and cooperation and thanked them for their steadfastness in discouraging bad behaviours in the state, adding that the House would soon start reassigning its members to educate the public on Sharia laws over the media.
Earlier, Hisbah Commander-General, Malam Ibrahim Maibushira, had urged the lawmakers not let political attacks within and outside Nigeria to discourage them from supporting the full implementation of Sharia in the state, disclosing that their role in the contemporary period could be linked to great people like Abu-Hanifa and others who made laws for the Muslim Ummah.
Maibushira told the Speaker that the command had accorded priority to enlightenment programmes, especially on how to protect the state’s younger generations from engaging in drug abuse.
He further disclosed that although people around the globe were watching the state with keen interest over its Sharia system, only recently at a national conference on Sharia in Bauchi, participants agitated constitutional backing for Sharia during the forthcoming constitutional review.
Sheikh Maibushira handed over a copy of the conference’s communiqué to the Speaker for perusal.
In his speech, leader of the delegation, Sheikh Adamu Gwaram said the legislators should redouble efforts in protecting and promoting Sharia laws, appealing that the House should advise police, judges and other stakeholders to support the state’s laws.
He charged the legislators to be more committed to Sharia principles with a view to ensuring that good deeds supersede bad ones in their domains.
Meanwhile, Speaker Gafasa has paid condolence visits to Hon. Danlami Hamza, member representing Fagge at the National Assembly and the state Head of Service over the death of the former’s senior wife and the latter’s elder brother respectively.
He prayed to Almighty Allah to forgive the deceased and grant them Aljannatul Firdausi.
In a related development, the Speaker has announced the death of 16-year old son of his Director of Press, Malam Abdullahi Abubakar Shanono.
